Trip Includes: Rods and reels, although you're welcome to bring your own.. Contact us for specific gear recommendations. A cooler with water and ice and a light lunch are provided. We can recommend flies and/or tackle at the shop in the morning.
What to Bring
Hat: Keep your noggin' covered
Sunglasses: Polarized glasses are a must. We recommend amber or copper colored lenses to cover most conditions.
Clothing: The weather on Lake Superior is among some of the most unpredictable anywhere. Generally, it's going to be a lot cooler than you think, especially in the spring months. It can be warm inland, but 20 degrees cooler on the lake. We have plenty of room, so bring clothing for all seasons any time of the year. Raingear is also recommended regardless of the forecast.
Fly Rods: 7-8 weights for Smallmouth, 8-9 weights for nearshore trout. Our favorite smallmouth setup is a Sage 890 X paired with a RIO Smallmouth Line. For nearshore trout, we usually rig up a Sage 990 Salt with an Intermediate RIO Outbound Short line.
Spinning Tackle: Medium action rods in the 7 foot to 7.5 foot length are great for a variety of species. For smallmouth, we generally use rods that can throw lightweight soft plastics rigged with 10 pound braid. For nearshore trout, a rod must be able to handle a hard fighting fish and throw a spoon. A medium power, fast action rod rigged with 15 pound braid works best.
Fishing License: A Wisconsin fishing license is required for all fishing trips. A Great Lakes Trout stamp is required for all trout fishing trips. Licenses can be purchased anytime through the WI DNR "Go Wild" website. https://gowild.wi.gov/lookupaccount
